Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
In 1984 I opened a two bay shop in Irmo, SC. In 1987 I married Susan Laney and she came to work with me and began to get things organized. We built our current location in 1989 and have been blessed daily ever since.
What is your primary product or service?
Our business is the repair of most foreign and domestic vehicles. It's much easier to state what we do not repair.... we do not repair transmissions or differentials and we are not a body shop. We offer dealership quality with what I feel to be great customer service. We have very little turnover with our employees so our job consistency is fantastic.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
As a young teenager I had a neighbor take me under his wing and we rebuilt a VW engine, from the top to the bottom. I then bugged my dad until he found me a body to put the engine in. I soon realized this was my ticket to freedom and I was hooked. I worked for K-Mart back in the day that they had an automotive department. I then went to work for Allens Exxon and towing service for many years. During this time I attended Midland Technical College. Mr. Allen was easing out of the full service side of his business and I decided to try it on my own with his full support. So with a $5000 loan from my dad and Mr. Allens referrals I was in business. I, along with my two other lead technicians, am a ASE Master Technician.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
In a nutshell we fix the whole car not just the easy stuff. There are many shops that will take the easy repairs and then "put you on the street" when things get difficult. We do not want to be that shop. Our goal is to service your vehicle from start to finish. We try to stay on top of the technology that modern vehicles need for proper diagnosis and repair. As mentioned we have very little employee turnover therefore the technician really has the chance to get to know your car on a long term basis. We do not pay our techs by commission which in my opinion keeps them honest... they are not tempted to find more wrong with your car just because the week may be slow. Lastly we are Christians and strive daily to treat people the way Christ has taught us... with honor and respect. Our reputation is very important to us and we work hard to maintain it.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We just have the one location. We tried two for a couple of years but felt like we were not able to give two locations our undivided attention so we closed our second location. If we do expand any further it will be at this location.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Leaving Columbia, take I-26 toward Spartanburg. Exit at 101-A. (This is Irmo...DO NOT SPEED) You will cross over the top of I-26 passing the Toyota dealership. Go two miles and we are on the left at the bottom of the second hill. (between Irmo Body Shop and Victory Bible Church).
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept cash, Visa, Master Card, Amex and Discover.
Which areas do you service?
We primarily draw clients from the Irmo, Dutch Fork, Lexington and Chapin areas... however, we have clients that still return to us for service from Hilton Head, Winnsboro, Orangeburg, Newberry and all of the places inbetween.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Susan and I are in the shop most days. We have an additional service writer, David Sherer. He has been with the company longer than 10 years and is more than experienced enough to handle the day to day business.
What are your hours of operation?
Monday - Thursday 8am to 5:30 pm
Friday 8am to 5pm.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
Referrals is the biggest compliment.... it states that we did a good job and that you want to share us with the people you know.
